Pro Tools video engine crashes when switching to Soundminer while playing

Pro Tools video engine crashes when switching to Soundminer while playing

System Information

SoundFlow 5.8.1

OS: darwin 23.6.0

ProductName: macOS
ProductVersion: 14.6.1
BuildVersion: 23G93

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Have SoundFlow running
  2. Press play on Pro Tools session that has video
  3. Switch to Soundminer while playing
  4. Audio stutters and video engine crashes
  5. Only happens when SoundFlow is running

Expected Result

I should be able to switch to Soundminer with no audio or video issues in Pro Tools

Actual Result

Audio stutters and video engine crashes

Workaround

I have to reset the video engine every time

Other Notes

This has been the behavior since I started using Soundflow last year. I've used Ventura and Sonoma and many different versions of everything and it's always the same behavior. I recently updated all my software and it still happens in the exact same way.

Even if I'm switching back and forth between Soundminer and Pro Tools without playing, I will get this error in Pro Tools when I try to play right after switching from Soundminer

Playback could not be started because of an engine reset. This may happen due to a CPU issue, a problematic driver, or because playback was started immediately after an engine change. : -22005

Again, when I close Soundflow and it's not running, I have none of these issues and everything is smooth.

    1. Hi Mike,

It looks like you have an application trigger for this Soundminer deck assigned:

Try removing this trigger. I have no idea why there would be a CPU spike when it switches to this deck, but worth it to rule it out (also since the deck appears to be empty anyway)

      1. Hi Christian,
        Thanks for the reply.

This worked of course, but that means I can't use Soundflow with both Pro Tools and Soundminer?

If I do decide to populate the Soundminer deck with macros I'd like to be able to use it.

Let me know if you have any other ideas as to why the application switch is causing these problems because I'll have to revisit this anyway when I start using Soundflow with Soundminer.

Is there some kind of log we can look at to identify the problem?

        Thanks!

        1. Hi Mike,

I think in your case I would try to replace the deck with something else (ie. create a new deck and see if you still see the issue).

I've never seen this reported before - my guess is that there in fact is a small CPU spike when switching decks, because SF needs to render the new data and send them over your USB bus to the Stream Deck. I can't tell why your Soundminer deck would be different than other ones though. Perhaps because your system's single-threaded performance might be close to exhaustion, and Soundminer also performs things when it receives focus, so it just nudges it over the edge.
It could also be exhaustion on the USB bus, in case your sound card and Stream Deck is on the same bus, for example.
A potential workaround, of course, would be to increase your buffer size.

I took a look at your log files from this report, and there's nothing out of the ordinary going on, it appears.
