Bounce factory failing

Hey Andrew,

I am having some problems with the app nowadays. I am bouncing stems for an album and have returned to the studio the day after starting the bounce process only to see that it has failed a couple of times now. For each bounce round with this album I've started over again from scratch with Bounce Factory just in case there was any errors on my end but it hasn't helped. The BF window is not covering any of the parts of the screen that BF needs to work. I have the latest BF version.

The client needs the files pretty soon so I hope you can help! I have the BF report for you here:

          Hi @Christer_A_Cederberg ,

          It's a problem I've seen before, but it's a weird Pro Tools thing where it's acting as if the Edit window isn't open after opening the session, so the bounces are unable to continue. I haven't been able to find a way to reproduce this, so it's very hard to fix. One thing that should at least make it easier to figure out what got printed and what didn't is that it fails right after opening the session, so it will never partially print a session with this error.

          One thing I noticed is that you are on Bounce Factory 1.3.7. 1.3.9 is the latest. There are fixes to some issues that can stop bouncing from continuing, but to be honest I'm not positive they would help in your case. My only advice to getting these printed at the moment is to restart everything, including the computer before you start bouncing, quit all other applications, and if it still happens just pick up from where you left off. The ones that did get bounced will be fine. Also the snapshots themselves are fine so there's no need to make them again. Just get rid of the ones that have already bounced and Bounce All for the rest.

          Once you have been able to deliver the files and have a little time let's see if we can find a recipe for reproducing the bug so I can actually fix it!

            Hey Andrew,

            OK, thanks. I'll see if restarting the computer will help. The second time I tried was after a restart (with no other apps running), but I'm crossing fingers. BF stops after just a few bounces on the first song it opens, so it can potentially take a lot of time to go through this album. BF has been working great most of the time so I'm hopeful it will work again soon.

            One thing I've registered is that when a full album is prepped for BF, Soundflow is slowed down. Almost as if prepping that many stems is hard to manage for the app. Might not be related at all though...

                It sounds as though there must be something specific about these sessions. Is there anything you can think of? Plugins that haven't been used on other sessions, larger track count, etc? It also sounds like these sessions might be a good test case for finding the problem, please export them from BF when you're done so we can troubleshoot further.

                It seems to happen right after opening the session most of the time. Are there any Pace dialogs or anything else out of the ordinary when opening them?

                  There are no Pace dialogs or anything like that that I've noticed. The only thing is the "some sidchain inputs were made inactive" dialogue and this one (popping up before every session)

                  I am mixing a different project today so I am unfortunately not able to spend time bouncing stems until I'm done with the ongoing project.

                      Hmmm, I already deal with the sidechain dialog so that shouldn't be an issue. I've never seen that other notification though, so maybe that's the issue. Is that a Sonar Works dialog?

                      Let me know when you're back on that project and maybe we can zoom and figure this out...

                        The only other thing I see in the logs is that I think you are restoring data that maybe you don't need to? If you don't need to restore plugins, sends etc, you could turn the Snapshot Data Recall Filter in the Settings off (clicking on the title of the filter). This will skip an entire step when opening the session and might make it work better. The solos and mutes will still recall properly, but unless you've taken multiple snapshots for the same session with different inserts, volume etc you don't need that step.

                        And you don't need to re-take the snapshots, it only affects what happens when you bounce.

                              I see from the logs that you're not actually on the latest SoundFlow. Download 5.3.0 here:

                              I'm not sure that's the issue but it won't hurt. The error you're getting is that it can't get to the poup menu in the groups list in the Edit Window. Is there any way that's covered up by something?

                              If not, a screen recording of it failing would be very helpful.

                                Ahh, sorry. I actually downloaded v5.30 after I made the data file and tried that, but it didn't help.

                                Yes, the Memory Locations window is opened by BF and is blocking the groups list. I reckon it's supposed to close the memory locations window before accessing the groups list but it might not do that. I'll try moving the memory locations window and try again after I'm done with my next mix. I'll get back to you soon!

                                              1. I guess few people place the memory locations window there, but it makes sense for me since I use the raven software. I haven't experienced it myself though as BF has been working great for some time now!

                                                      I've moved the memory locations window, so that shouldn't be the problem I think.

                                                      By the way, I can't collect the user files. I get this: "Error: The given key 'tag' was not present in the dictionary."

                                                          It's a little tough to see exactly where it's failing from the video, but all of the group list related stuff that wasn't working before is working. I think this might be something else.

                                                          I need to fix the bug running the Collect User Files script from the package, but in the meantime, you can collect user files directly from within the app. Click on Settings, then Report A Problem and the top button will collect the files for you. Post them here and I'll have a look later tonight.

                                                                                It's exactly the same thing in all of the logs when it fails, it's having trouble getting track information for one of the tracks in the session. I can see from the logs that you successfully made a Snapshot for the session "Lagamus Lieggas_Lagamus Lieggaseamus v6_1". Are the errors happening on the same session or only on other sessions? If it's only on some sessions it would really help to get copies (with no audio) of a session that works for you and one that doesn't. If it happens on all sessions a screen recording would let me see where it's going wrong to try and get a clue. I'm completely unable to recreate the error here so it's hard to figure out where to look.

                                                                                      Of course, all of the sessions work fine here. When it fails for you is there a Pro Tools dialog left open on the screen? I think at this point I really need to see a screen recording of it failing.

                                                                                      I'm sure it will be something simple once I figure out what it actually is.

                                                                                            Ok!!! I see where it's going wrong. I may not be able to fix it immediately since I'm still not sure why it's broken, just where it breaks. A workaround for now would be to make sure all of the tracks in the session are visible and set to a track height of small. Then it should work as expected. I'll post a fix as son as I figure out what's different with these sessions on your system that is causing the problem.

                                                                                                  Exactly. Just do it before taking the snapshot and before bouncing.

                                                                                                  BF is supposed to do exactly that, but for some reason it is leaving some of the tracks in mini height, which will make the next step of the process fail. I have a different bit of code that works, but it isn't as reliable so I'm not sure I want to put it in a release unless more people are having this issue. The good thing is I can recreate i=it in one of the sessions now so at least I can test.

I'm mixing an atmos album with lot's of tracks next week and I was starting to think I had to print all the files manually, so if this works now it will be a huge relief!

                                                                                                    I'll report back to you after todays mix is done. Then I can start with the stem printing again.

                                                                    I had never seen this error until about a week ago when somebody had the exact same issue launching the app. In their case though it was that they had started backing up their documents folder to iCloud and something had screwed it all up. Does your documents folder look normal and you can access everything ok?

                                                                        I've made a change to where the reports are being stored which will work around this issue (should be in the store soon). I would definitely check out your Documents folder though, and if you know what might have changed let me know and maybe we can figure out what's the same with your system and the other user's.

                                                                        Also, it's much better to start a new post in the forum than to re-use an old one for a new problem. It makes it a lot harder for me to find and keep track of things.

                                                                          Actually, this is most likely the problem. All plugin presets disappeared suddenly a week ago. I had to reconfigure this in the preferences to make it work again. Now I tried to open the "documents" folder but it's gone for some reason. There is a "new" document folder with a different name on the computer now, so that must be the one Bounce factory needs to see I reckon?

                                                                              If you get the newest version of Bounce Factory it won't need to use the Documents folder at all. It was only storing some text files there anyway.

                                                                              There's definitely something going on with people's documents folder though, since you're the second person to have this happen.
