Just bought MOMdeck and if I could have demo'd it I would have decided not to buy. So why can't you demo packages?
So I just got the MomDeck package because, like a ton of people, I'd like to have more flexibility with the DADMan software. I watched Andrew's demo video and there were just so many things that were not covered. So I just bought it and now that I am messing with it there seem to be a lot of limitations with it that were not discussed in the videos. First off, connecting it to DADMan. There is no explanation of why the package says "Searching for DADMan". So I just paid $69 for a package that can't connect. Ok, where is that information? Secondly, I use iPads, like most people. I'd imagine at least 50% of the user base is using iPads and not just stream decks. There are brief mentions of iPads but not enough to know what it's going to be like on an iPad until you buy it and mess around. So I guess now that I have I see that there are a limited number of speaker and source buttons on the front page. On my Avid Control I can see 9 sources and 8 Fold downs on 1 screen. Why can't I do more with a paid app? This app seems very music focused and not post focused. I have 16 sources and I know guys who have twice as many. Why can't they all be on one page? And why can't they be on any page I want? Ugh. I think in general Soundflow needs a demo option for packages. Some of the usefulness of them depends on what the individual wants and there is no way to know what works and what doesn't without trying them out. This package is an ok start but it doesn't come close to clicking two buttons on the Avid Control app. I understand how difficult these are to build but they have to be much better than what's free to charge for them. @Andrew_Scheps, @chrscheuer

And let me just add that if I'm totally missing things that are all doable my apologies.

Hi Chris,
Apps can be made with in-app purchases, where developers can make trial periods (for example Bounce Factory does this), or they can be made with up-front payment which is simpler and displays the sticker price for end users (like known from app stores). The MOMDeck app uses the 2nd option here, which doesn't have an option for demo periods.
In terms of getting your app to connect, hopefully Andrew can help with that. The app should work just fine with iPads.
The limitations on what's possible to have on a single page comes down to what's available in the protocol that the app uses. The Avid Control app uses EUCON, which is not available to us for this kind of control.- CChris Testa @Chris_Testa
Again, Christian, I would have a policy of all packages over $10 for instance, to have mandatory demo periods otherwise if they don't work or are filled with bugs it just reflects badly on Soundflow in general and that shouldn't happen with such an amazing app. Just my opinion of course.

Thanks for your feedback, Chris. I totally get your point and I'll definitely talk to the team about this and if we need to adjust our policies going forward.

Hi @Chris_Testa ,
Sorry the implementation of the app doesn’t seem to fit into your way of working.
First of all, if it isn’t connecting then that should be something that is easily fixed. If,you have made a Mom profile in Dadman that only has one active layer there is a bug that keeps it from finishing establishing communication. I’m working on it but in the meantime just make sure your profile has at least two active layers, even if you don’t assign any of the buttons in the second.
Once you have the profile set up, if you see and enable the SoundFlow Mom in the device list of Dadman, enabled the Monitor for your Dadman device, and you have made a MOM profile and attached it to the SoundFlow Mom then connection should happen automatically. If it doesn’t then we can sort it out with a quick zoom. The app does work on iPhone, iPad or any Android device. You just load the SoundFlow app and pick the deck you want from there. There are quite a few people using it this way. If any of the Dadman stuff is unclear in the walkthrough video please let me know and I’ll fix it. It’s quite a lot of info if you’ve never done it before, so I could easily have glossed over things. As far as the number of buttons available at one time, the app uses the MOM protocol to talk to Dadman, which means the limitations are nothing that can be programmed around using the current method of communication. You get a total of four layers, so, including the external, you get 11 buttons per layer that can be used at any one time (44 in all). And as far as putting functionality anywhere you want, you can, just assign them the way you want in the Mom profile. Believe me, when there is another way of communicating with Dadman that gives more functionality I’ll be all over it!
Avid control does give you a different way of controlling the Dadman monitor section, so its advantage is having more sources available at one time. There are quite a few things that this app does that Avid Control doesn’t. First is to allow you to place any of the buttons on any deck you want, including your own custom decks alongside any other commands you have built in SoundFlow. These decks, and the pre-built ones can be loaded on a hardware Stream Deck which gives you tactile control. You can assign keystrokes to any button so that you can use keyboard shortcuts (or any other type of trigger) to switch sources, enable fold downs etc, without having to look at a screen to find a button. You have volume presets and the ability to nudge the volume in any increment you want, either from the app or using triggers. You can name and color buttons (a small one but very useful). There is a momentary button that can be used for triggering any function. You can use a midi knob to control volume if you have one in your setup. There are more but those are all the big ones.
If none of that functionality enhances your workflow and you’re happy with the Avid Control implementation we’ll figure something out. Keep in mind that this can run alongside Avid Control, so you could use Avid Control to access your sources that aren’t used as much, put the commonly used ones on layer 1 of MOMDeck with the rest on other layers.
Anyway, hope this helps and if you’re having any more trouble getting it up and running to be able to really check it out, let me know here and we’ll set up a zoom.

I'm getting the error when I'm using your pre made deck. I was using that just to check it out. Again, I want to say this is certainly something that a lot of people have been looking forward to but I just wish there was more of a discussion of the limitations of the package before having to buy. I understand that there is no way to cover everything but honestly if there is already a known bug that should be disclosed even if there is an easy fix. There should be an explanation of the initial setup and if there are issues like I am having how to fix them. Since it's somewhat trying to replace the monitor section on the Avid Control I would have a pro's and con's of why this package might be better than Avid control for some and not for others. I just think if you're going to have a "buy without trying" policy then you have to go deeper on explaining things than you thought you should. Probably a beta period or at the least have a demo period. I understand that these all take time and all that but in the market you're asking for $70 for an app that does a couple more things than a free app. Regardless of the amount of time you put into it that's a big ask so at the very minimum it should work right away. Also, understanding a post work flow v a music work flow would help to make these packages more universal and if they're not being designed that way then it should be noted that this package is more focused to a music mixing workflow and not that of post. Soundflow is a brilliant app and a lifesaver when it comes to speeding up workflows. I appreciate Christian and the entire community who are alway super helpful figuring things out. I just think if you're going to be charging top tier prices for packages they should be pretty flawless from the get go and if there seems like there might be issues than offer it as a demo.

Hi Chris,
At the moment you're the only one having a connection error. The known bug came up yesterday and is in the process of being fixed, hoping to have a new build tomorrow or Friday. There is also a very simple workaround, just make sure your MOM profile has more than one layer enabled. You don't have to assign anything to it, just enable it. If you're still having problems connecting after that then there is something peculiar to your system and I would be glad to troubleshoot over Zoom (that's how we found the one layer bug).
As far as explaining the functionality of the deck, there are three videos, a Quick Start, an in depth description of all of the modules included in the package, and a Dadman tutorial if you've never set up a Monitor profile and/or MOM profile. I thought those gave a pretty clear explanation of how to set it (and Dadman) up as well as insight into the features and functionality. I think compared to the free deck there is actually quite a bit that this does that allows a much more integrated way to interact with the Dadman monitor setup.
Also I'd love to know what there is in the post workflow that this app doesn't cover. Several of the beta testers work in post (both in editorial and mixing) and they're happy with it and use it every day.
I am in no way trying to tell you you are wrong about anything you've posted and I'm definitely not trying to pick a fight. The tone of forum posts is always tricky. I do feel that we should overcome the connection issue and that way you can at least explore the app properly.
And just to be clear, it was absolutely not released with known issues and the couple of bugs that were found initially were fixed immediately with new builds being posted within an hour. The connection bug with single layer MOM profiles didn't come up until late yesterday afternoon, is in the process of being fixed and has a very simple workaround. Like I said above, if you have more than one active layer in the attached profile and are still having issues let's figure out what's happening with a zoom.
Thanks,
Andrew- CChris Testa @Chris_Testa
I've got it connected now and I'm going to keep messing with it. I know it's an involved package and it takes some time to fully understand it's potential. I guess I just wish there was a demo period. Some of these packages take a minute to integrate and work through to understand if they are going to make your personal workflow more efficient or not. I'm trying to figure that out now. Again, I work with an iPad and I have 90% of my sound flow buttons on the top layer. I have a second folder for naming and deliverables. But to me having to move through pages to get to sources is not efficient, but again, maybe there is a way to get them all on the front page of my surface. Ideally it needs to completely replace the Avid Control Monitor section. It doesn't have individual speaker selects as far as I can tell which is unfortunate. I know you spoke of fold downs and I have many of those but soloing speakers is a daily thing in the post mixing world so if I have to bounce between apps then it's not efficient. If there is a way to set this up then let me know what I'm missing. And I would suggest if you don't use an iPad for your sound flow then maybe have one of the beta guys make a walkthrough of how they use the package with a custom surface. Most guys that I know that are using Sound flow are using it that way. I can figure it out but it would be nice to see it before I make the purchase. And finally, as I mentioned to Christian, I would make all your packages have a demo option. Most of the community helps each other for free and I'm not suggesting that any hard work should be given out for free and I'm sure most of the people who buy are totally happy but there are a set of people who need to see if it fits into their workflow and if after learning it, it doesn't, then they should have the option to save their money. Just my opinion.
Andrew Scheps @Andrew_Scheps
I can walk you through the speaker soloing using fold downs as well as the rest on a zoom. No point trying to cover it all here. If you’re interested let me know at info@bouncefactory.net and we’ll set it up (I’m on UK time).
