Bounce Factory stalls when starting a bounce.

    Hi @Andrew_Scheps

Thanks for developing Bounce Factory, it has been really handy! Unfortunately I've recently encountered a little glitch.

When I begin the bouncing process, sometimes BounceFactory will get hung up when it is trying to choose a file to import session data from.

It looks as though it is trying to navigate to a specific session file, but it gets hung up on the pane where you would type in a file name to go to. The file name Bounce Factory types in is the session name with a suffix of a letter and 13 digits. After it types that file in, it can't navigate away from that pane, and the computer keeps giving a little alert sound.

Do you have any advice on what might be causing this hang up?

Let me know if you would like any additional info or clarification. Here is a link to my user files in case they are helpful.

    Thanks,

            Hi @nick_krill ,

Thanks for sending the user files. I'm at a conference today but should be able to have a look tomorrow. Everything you're describing sounds correct (except the part where it gets stuck).

In the meantime, do you have more than one snapshot per session? If not, and you just have multiple mix passes per snapshot (or you have multiple snapshots but the only difference is the timeline selection) then you can turn off the step where it is restoring the snapshot data because nothing will need to be changed in your session except solos and mutes. Go to the Bounce Factory settings and turn off the Snapshot Data Recall Filter (you can just click on the title to disable it completely) and that step will be skipped because it is redundant.

Also, a screen recording of it failing is never a bad thing.

            Thanks!
            Andrew

I had a very quick look at the logs and I see that you're on an older version of SoundFlow. Please update to the latest and see if that makes a difference.

                    Hi @Andrew_Scheps ,

Thanks for the reply, and the suggestions. I updated to SoundFlow v5.4.7 this morning and I'm still seeing the issue with Bounce Factory getting stuck.

I did notice something odd, that I'll mention in case it is a clue.

Some sessions are bouncing fine, while others are getting stuck. All the sessions that get stuck have one thing in common. They each have a copy of that extra session file with the long suffix of digits in the songs' main Pro Tools session folder.

Here is a link to both a screen shot of a Session Folder with the extra session file, and also a screen recording of Bounce Factory getting stuck

                    https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/qusf8w4zhgwxtvn7s5txq/nick_krill_BounceFactoryGettingStuck.zip?rlkey=p1hsug9w31scphq3gelyoddji&dl=0

At the stage where Bounce Factory gets stuck, it will get stuck there seemingly forever. I'll have to manually stop it by canceling SoundFlow scripts, and then canceling BounceFactory.

Hope this new info helps a little bit. Thanks again for taking the time to look into it.

                    Thanks,
                    nick

PS - I don't want to muddy the troubleshooting waters, but I recently got a new error. This was when trying to bounce some of the sessions that seemed to be working correctly (the ones without the extra session file with the long suffix in their session folders)

I got a warning shortly after pressing the "Bounce Session" button. No bounces occurred, and in the Bounce Factory bounce report log, the Warning was:

"batchBounce reported an error: RefferenceError: newSessionBounceSettings in not defined"

If that seems like a separate issue I can start a new help thread for that one...but figured I'd mention it in case it was related.

                        Hi @nick_krill ,

Ok, making progress. The sessions that have the weird session file in the folder are actually failing when taking the snapshot. not recalling. I'm not sure exactly why. But I'm still looking.

Could you send new user files so I have the logs for the new error?

Also, re-read my post above about whether or not you have multiple snapshots for each session or not. If you don't then you should be able to disable the filter as directed above and be able to get bounces done while we figure out what's happening.

                        Thanks!
                        Andrew

Also, for the sessions that aren't working, do they take a long time to save?

                                Hi @Andrew_Scheps ,

Thanks for continuing to look into this.

Here is a link to a new set of user files:

                                https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/jhu45k74823xp7lk806pg/Bounce-Factory-Data-nickkrill-2023-08-26-08-24-00.379.zip?rlkey=kvpfzjtz4c99rr5jeoru2wr6f&dl=0

Interestingly, with that "batchBounce reported an error: RefferenceError: newSessionBounceSettings in not defined" error, after the bounces failed I clicked "Bounce Session" again just for the heck of it, and the bounces were successful the second time.

Thanks for the tip on the Snapshot Data Recall Filter. Each session does have at least one Mini Snap, where different tracks have mutes and solos active at the same time. (Making a "dry" vocal stem with vocal soloed and effects muted) Would bypassing the Snapshot Data Recall Filter interfere with a Mini Snap like this?

For your question about saving, no, the sessions that aren't working don't take a long time to save.

                                Thanks,
                                nick

MiniSnaps are fine! It's only if you have to click Take Snapshot more than once for a session that you would need the recall filter on. If all of your mix passes are contained in one Snapshot you're good.

The issue with those session files is some sort of timing thing with the Mac OS file system so I was hoping that was it. You can delete those strangely named sessions, and if you can find a consistent repro case (a particular session that almost always does it etc) let me know. You don't even have to try bouncing, just if it puts that type of session in the session folder when you take the Snapshot.

                                        Hi @Andrew_Scheps ,

I think that I've found at least two sessions that consistently create that strangely named session in the session folder. Let me know if you'd like any info on them, or if there are any little tests I can try on my end that might shed some light on things.

Also, in case this is a clue....both sessions popped up a little SoundFlow warning notification while Bounce Factory was working away after I'd hit the "Proceed" button.

Here is a link to a screen shot of the moment that the SoundFlow warning pops up:

Hope that info is useful. Let me know if there is anything I can do on my end to help.

                                        Thanks,

PS - Turning off the Snapshot Data Recall Filter worked like a charm to print the sessions. Thanks for that suggestion!

I’ll have a look in the morning. Any chance of getting one of the session files (no audio)? We’ll definitely figure this out!

That session works fine here, I think we may need to have a zoom to figure this one out. At least you seem to have a repro case on your system.

The new error is also related to the Snapshot Data so hopefully you'll be good to bounce while we figure out what's happening.
