Bounce Factory stalls when Pro Tools displays "Save Changes to ... before closing" dialog

By Blake Eiseman @Blake_Eiseman

I sometimes get Pro Tools sessions that ask if you want to save changes before closing the session. It seems that Bounce Factory gets hung up when this happens, since it doesn't move forward.

I just started a few bounces, and came back to check on progress only to find the following on my screen. Once I clicked "Don't Save" Bounce Factory went along its merry way.

Any ideas how to work past this?

@Blake_Eiseman , I’ll investigate when I’m back in the studio tomorrow. Please always include User Files so I can see the logs. I can’t really do much without them.

The best way to report a BF bug is use the “Report a Problem” button in the Bounce Factory settings. This will walk you through the bug reporting steps and also help to post the bug in the Bounce Factory forum, not the general forum where I won’t necessarily see it.

        Thanks!

Hi @Andrew_Scheps I just had this happen again, so I was able to collect the user files this time. Please let me know if this helps.

                Hi @Blake_Eiseman ,

Thanks for the files. In the logs I'm not seeing any errors. Are you manually clicking "Save"? Also, none of the logs are referencing the session in our screenshot which is really strange. Did you save the User Files after taking the screenshot? Maybe save them again and send the latest ones.

I can't get it to happen here, so I'm trying to get as much info about what is happening on your end. Also, what percentage of the time does this happen?

                Thanks,
                Andrew

Hi Andrew, yes, I had to manually click "Save". I don't know a percentage of how often it happens, it's quite low I guess but often enough that makes me realize I can't trust that it will continue without getting stuck on this.

I don't see any errors in the logs, but I think I do see where it happened. It was after the song "THJ" and before the song "Turtle Bay."

Look in the log file LOG 2024-04-21 12/28/26.418 Bounce Factory Activity Log. You'll see between the time stamps of 12:36 and 12:49, that's a period of about 13 minutes where it was just sitting and waiting. That's when the "Close session" window was open and waiting for input. I happened to come in and notice it, and manually clicked Save.

2024-04-21 12:36:00.501: [BncAll] [INFO] Waiting for the session to open
2024-04-21 12:49:49.289: [BncAll] [INFO] Session must be open

Not sure if this helps. If/when it happens again, I'll send another set of user files.

Thanks for the specifics, very helpful. Is the session THJ particularly large? I'm thinking this has to be a timing thing between starting to close the session and when the Save dialog comes up but no matter what I do I can't recreate here.

Nope, not a particularly large session. Also, something else interesting, if I re-run the same set of passes, it will not necessarily fail again in the same spot. I've had that happen ... one time a session will hang it up, and another time the same session will work fine.

I know Pro Tools is sometimes weird about asking to save a session, even if nothing has been changed in the session. Does BF check for this dialog box at all? If not, is there a way to add this check? And if it does, is there a way to add a redundancy (maybe a second check) after it thinks it closed this dialog?

Just spitballing here ... let me know if I can provide anything else. and of course if it pops up again, I'll send you a new set of files.

Believe me, it checks for everything at least 3 times and sometimes more. That's why this is so frustrating. If there was a 100% repro case I could nail it easily.

                          Hi @Jacob_Lacroix_Cardin ,

Can you please send your User Files so I can see if it is the same issue?

                          Thanks,
                          Andrew

Hey @Andrew_Scheps I have another set of user files for you, this just happened to me again while bouncing 3 separate sessions (only one pass per session).

Probably won't show any errors, but as before, it just sat there patiently waiting for me to come in, notice it, and click "No" to the Save Session dialog.

Looking at the logs, it looks like it sat there for about an hour, between 21:14:51 and 22:17:01.
