Notes - Samply integration: Ability to pull notes from Samply files not uploaded through Media Uploader

By Rich Breen @Rich_Breen

Hi - Was excited to use this new integration allowing pulling notes from Samply into an existing Pro Tools mix session. I'm hoping I'm missing something, but it appears to me that you can't pull notes from a file on Samply unless it was uploaded via the Notes Media Uploader?

If so, this makes this feature almost useless for me - it means I must upload mixes to Samply via the SF Media Uploader, which is clunky and only allows me to upload one...file...at...a...time. The normal workflow is to mix in Pro Tools, process the mixes for reference (changing encoder type, hit target levels, etc) in a batch processor (Wavelab, or Izotope), then drag that batch of mixes onto the Samply project and be done with it. I can't do this if I want to be able to import notes from Samply. Seems like a significant limitation to what would otherwise be a really nice integration. I don't care if the notes don't come back in the correct position if the mix session didn't start at 0 - I can always just align all the notes with a single move in Pro Tools.

Being able to select multiple files from the finder in the Media Uploader would be a significant help, but really, I'd just like to be able to select any file that I have resident on Samply for notes import back into Pro Tools.

    I'm hoping I'm missing something?

    thanks!

        Thanks for contacting SoundFlow support.

Please note, that the best way to get help with a script, macro or other content installed from the Store or content that you've made yourself, is to select the script/macro, then click the red Need help button, and then click "Get help with this script or macro".
By using this method, we will get access to more information and so should be able to help you quicker.
You can read more about how this works here: bit.ly/sfscripthelp

If you're seeing an error that isn't related to scripts or macros, and you think this is a bug in SoundFlow, please file a Help/Issue bug report.

          Hi Rich,

Thanks for your feedback. You're quite right that the current version only allows import of notes through files that were uploaded via the Media Uploader.

This was done for a few reasons:

          • This provides for a very straightforward importer workflow with the fewest number of screens/options to choose from, since we can assume the source (all uploads appear on the first screen of the importer).
          • This ensures all metadata is correctly collected. Importing from a Samply file that didn't originate from Media Uploader would miss important metadata in terms of adjusting to the proper offset in the session

This doesn't mean we can't figure out a way to support your use case too though - but we needed to start with a simple solution that doesn't have too many things to configure.

I'll log this as a feature request.

This issue is now tracked internally by SoundFlow as SF-1406

I'd like to second this request. I find the Notes uploader not to fit into my workflow right now, but would love to be able to import the comments from any Samply track into any existing Pro Tools session. The timing offset seems easy enough to correct for.

                  Thanks,
                  Eli

Yeah, if you're forced to use the Soundflow uploader it needs to be much better than it currently is. Would be a useful script if it wasn't so limited - as is, I can't use it.

                      1. Please let us know which features you're missing so we can be sure to include your wishes in our backlog :)

                        1. We've already recorded what you said earlier in this thread, but just asking in case there's anything else.

I think item one on the list would be to make the uploader allow multiple uploads - one at a time is not usable here. Alternately (and really preferable for me) would be to just allow pulling notes from a Samply file regardless of whether it was uploaded via Soundflow or not. I mean, I really just want to be able to push a button and bring in all the notes to a marker timeline in my session - I can align them all in one move to the song start if need be - just being able to get them in would be a real timesaver, but the current workflow isn't usable here.

                              1. Thanks for the additional details!

                                1. Hi Rich and others,

With Notes 2.2.0 (requiring SoundFlow 5.9.1), you should now be able to import notes from any Samply file:

Linked issue SF-1406 updated: The feature request we were tracking in SF-1406 (to be able to import markers from a Samply file not uploaded through the Media Uploader) has now been implemented with Notes 2.2.0 and SoundFlow 5.9.1.
