Constant console Log notification that an action failed

By Stephanie Brown @Stephanie_Brown

I am setting up my Soundflow deck and some of the commands/buttons are not working. However, one button in particular didn't work, so I removed it from my deck, but I am constantly getting console log notifications that the action failed and I have no way of clearing it to stop it from coming back (like every 30 seconds I keep getting a notification). It keeps messing up any actions from other buttons when the notification comes on. It only seems to stop when I have the console log window open.

      Hi @Stephanie_Brown,

Thanks for the message. This is Chad, a member of the SoundFlow team.

This sounds like it could be an issue with a run-forever script (a script that is run continually in the background) like the "Output Window: Follow Selected Track" command from the "Views & Windows" section of SoundFlow's Official Pro Tools package.

For issues like this, which involve multiple scripts, macros, and decks, it can be helpful for our support team to open a copy of a user account to diagnose issues. Do you approve of me looking at your account this way to help us find the source of the issue?

Note: This will not affect your account in any way; I would only make a copy of the account for testing purposes.

Furthermore, can I have you create a "Help/Issue" request via this workflow?
      https://soundflow.org/docs/help#help-issue

The "Help/Issue" workflow creates a new thread in the forum with encrypted log files for the SoundFlow Team to examine.

Yes you may look at my account. I can send you a copy of the log file if that will help.

Track rename failed is the constant message.

                Thanks, @Stephanie_Brown,

This seems to result from using "Application Triggers" to trigger a few of your macros.

In general, Application triggers and Window triggers should be used sparingly and typically only for showing a specific deck for an application, like you are doing with the "Show Pro Tools Deck" action. Otherwise, these can be triggered too often.

You can filter all of your commands for Application Triggers by clicking the underlined "A" button above the "New Button."

I would suggest the following changes to your account:

                • Remove the "Application Triggers" by clicking the "x" on the "When Pro Tools becomes active" trigger on the right side of the editor for the script called "Rename Selected Track" and the macro called "Return." These are probably firing too frequently with an application trigger.
                • Remove the "When 'iZotope RX' becomes active" trigger for the macro called "Send to RX Connect"
                • Remove one of the "When 'Pro Tools' becomes active" triggers from "Show Pro Tools Deck" - this is just a duplicate situation.

I would also suggest reviewing your "Stream Deck Triggers" running when a "Stream Deck" device is connected. These may be okay, but depending on how many Stream Deck devices you have, you may only want one or two of these to be active.

You mentioned that some buttons were not working, I'd be curious if this is because some of the commands have become unlinked like this scenario on your "Basic Deck":

To relink the command, you can click "Add Existing Macro" or pin this deck and drag a command ontop of this button.

I am new to programming Stream Deck, so it's all a learning curve. I will clear out the Application triggers per your suggestion.

As for the buttons that didn't work, it wasn't because there was nothing assigned, it's that I got an 'action failed' notification when trying to use some of the ProTools buttons (like trying to trigger some audiosuite plugins, that are currently not listed in the menus). I am having a bigger issue with the Izotope buttons/actions. So still trying to figure those out.

I only have on stream deck device, so there should be no issue there with conflicting devices.

                    Right on, @Stephanie_Brown.

If you are working with multiple stream decks or a combination of Stream decks and iPads, you may want to set up a single macro that shows decks for multiple devices like this:

This is further explained in this YouTube video:

As for the buttons that didn't work for you, let us know when you encounter that issue again, and we can look at why specific buttons would not be working. If there are buttons from decks we have provided that aren't working, we'd love to help you get those working again!

Thank you so much for your help! Hard to know when it's user error or if there really is an issue with the button.

                        1. Chad Wahlbrink @Chad2025-06-26 19:46:06.536Z

                          No problem, @Stephanie_Brown!

If it'd be helpful, I'd also be happy to hop on a Zoom call with you to discuss any questions you have about setting up your decks with SoundFlow. If that seems like the best option at any point, just reach out to support@soundflow.org, and we can set that up.

So good to know! I'll keep that in mind. Thank you for the offer.

I did everything you recommended from your prior comment and removed the various application triggers but a strange thing just happened. I was going through and trying to program other buttons and I tried with Izotope again. I was using the Izotope--RX Connect--send with continuous file button and the whole thing got stuck in a 'failed action' notice loop that wouldn't quit. It would cycle between Izotope and RX and I couldn't get it to stop. It looped like 250 times before I had to hard reboot the computer. Funny though the 'failed action' error was referring to a Spectral Layers audiosuite plug in launch button I was working on yesterday and it didn't work, so I had deleted the button and script, so not sure why the log it kept referring to it.

                                    Hi, @Stephanie_Brown,

Thanks for the update. If that happens again, you can try using ⌃⇧Escape, which will stop all running commands.

I'm not sure why that happened. We would need you to send another Help/Issue Request to diagnose what caused that kind of loop. If you'd like me to look at the logs for that time frame, feel free to send that through.

I just checked a copy of your account, and it looks like you have cleaned up the Application triggers, so you should be less prone to that happening in the future.

That offer still stands if you want to have a quick Zoom call to review your account and discuss any buttons or decks that aren't behaving as expected.

I would love to zoom. However, I would need to do it before work, since I am not available during working hours, 9am-7pm PST. I am available starting at 7:30am.

Sounds good, @Stephanie_Brown. Contact us at support@soundflow.org, and I can send a scheduling link. I'm on EST, so 7:30 a.m. PST should be easy for me most days.

And thank you for sending the logs with your other post here:

The logs are automatically encrypted in that post so that our team can access them, so I have all the info I need to look into it.
