Question about Keyboard Shortcuts

    Hello,
So I know this isn't a forum for the SSL UF8 but I have a few questions that I am hoping you guys can help with. So, I just got an SSL UF8 controller and I am using it with Pro Tools. The UF8 allows you to run a handful of keyboard commands...basically macros from the unit. When I enter in some Pro Tool shortcuts to use from the UF8 they don't work but most of the shortcut I enter do. Unfortunately the ones I really want to work are not such as opening Strip Silence and "Scroll to Track". I am trying integrate it so it flows with my Pro Tools Soundflow deck.

I am wondering if Soundflow software is interfering with the keyboard shortcuts when the SSL UF8 tries to run some keyboard shortcuts which is one of my main questions. If so do you think I could turn something off to allow the UF8 to have control over some shortcuts in Pro Tools? Or do you think I should uninstall Soundflow and see if that is what is causing the problem. If I uninstall Soundflow what are the directions to do that. Maybe I uninstall and get the UF8 going and then reinstall Soundflow?

Lastly, the SSL UF8 runs on HUI and midi.

Any suggestions would be of great service and help.

    Thanks for your time, Chris

    1. Hi Chris,

You can always temporarily bypass SoundFlow's keyboard controller by pressing Ctrl+Esc (or click SF icon and choose Bypass). You can also just quit SoundFlow by clicking SF icon -> Quit. There's no uninstall needed to check if it changes anything. SF doesn't change anything on your computer when it's not running.

That being said, to properly integrate the two, you'd probably get a better integration if you don't have two different systems trying to send shortcuts to Pro Tools at the same time. Such a setup can quickly become complex and difficult to troubleshoot.

I'd recommend performing all macro tasks from SoundFlow. Then, have your UF8 trigger those things via SF. That ensures you have all macros stored in one place and a way to set up triggers in different ways (UF8, Stream Deck, iPad, MIDI etc.)

          Hi Christian,

I really appreciate the quick reply. So, I tried bypassing SF and that didn’t change anything so then I tried quitting SF and that didn’t change anything either. I did find something interesting…..when I use the macro shortcuts that have Command, Option, Shift, and Control the keyboard shortcuts won’t work. But if I use any other command for example: ,1, for a marker it works great and takes me directly to the marker location in PT.

So, I am thinking something is blocking those particular keys from working properly. I have SSL support trying to figure it out as well but I thought I would check to see if you had any suggestions and its good to know that SF doesn’t change anything when its not running.

I like your suggestion of keeping the macros all in one location. If I were to have the macro tasks all in SF and then trigger those in UF8, how would I do that?

I would first start with these macros: “Scroll to Track” and have it select Basic folders such as Drums, Guitar, Bass, Band, Vocals, and Print track. And then a toggle to open and close the folders which is: Shift F.

If you could explain step by step of how I could do that I would be greatly appreciative. Do you happen to have a UF8 as well? I can send any screenshots if needed. I am still pretty new to SF and setting this type of stuff up but I can follow directions.

I think it would be cool to integrate both SF and the UF8 into my workflow to help speed up my workflow.

I appreciate your time and help!

          Chris

          1. Unfortunately, I don't have an UF8, but I'm sure there may be others on the forum who do. Perhaps open a new thread with UF8 in the title and ask about how to have it fire SF commands?

SF can react to many types of input. If you can get the UF8 to send MIDI messages, that's one way you could hook them up.

                Hey Christian,

No problem and I got good news! I figured it out. I was entering the syntax wrong. For some odd reason SSL 360 software requires you to press all of the keys at once to enter the command correctly. Then it adds + signs after each character. It won't let you manually enter the + signs in for each command. Crazy, but glad I figured it out. SSL support didn't even know that either. Maybe I should join their tech support team lol!

I'll definitely still take you up on creating a new thread to fire SF command from the UF8. That would be pretty cool!

                Thanks again for your time,

                Chris
