Wifi vs Ethernet cable?
Hi guys - does my studio computer need to have an ethernet (cable) connection to my network in order for my tablet (wifi) to connect in the Soundflow app? Or should it work via Wifi on both devices? I've been using an ethernet cable without any problems but i'm trying to get a temporary setup working via wifi without success :-/ Tablet asks "Select a server" but my computer isn't showing up on screen??
Thanks, Mike

Hi Mike,
The devices need to be on the same subnet on your router so that they can discover each other using Apple's Bonjour technology. That would work with either wifi or cabled - but it sounds like you may need to check your router's settings to ensure that you're not setting up the devices on separate subnets, where they'd be invisible to each other.

Hi Christian, thanks for your speedy replay and hope you're well. I've already had Soundflow working fine with my computer connected via an ethernet cable, but it doesn't seem to work when I switch to Wifi with identical router settings. Does this mean it's not a router issue or does something need changing in the router moving from ethernet to wifi? I don't actually have access to our router settings here as our internet hardware is controlled by an external IT company :-/ Please could you let me know your thoughts?
Thanks :)

Hi Mike.
If you're not in control of your router, then there's not much we or you could do in this case. On typical simple home router setups, Wifi and Ethernet connections would be on the same subnet and allowed to connect to each other. It sounds like in your configuration, that's not the case. It's generally possible to use SF across any type of network connection provided that the router is configured correctly to allow such connections, but it sounds like it's not in your case - it sounds like the Wifi and Ethernet networks are on different subnets which prohibits the devices from discovering the SF app.

Hi Christian, thanks for the info....We haven't had any issues with the studio computer (ethernet) talking to other wifi devices on the network (laptops, phones, tablets, etc) but I'll ask our IT company to confirm if this could be the issue. Will let you know if it remains unresolved. Thanks again! Take care for now :)

Thanks. Share with them that Bonjour needs to work across the devices and that they'll need to be on the same subnet. We unfortunately aren't able to assist much with individual network setups as there's a million different ways routers can be configured - and we're not networking experts.
In future releases of the surface app we'll try to add ways to get around this auto-discovery in more complex networking setups.
