SoundFlow is not Always Connecting with iPad Decks when Powering Up MacStudio

    System Information

    SoundFlow 5.10.5

    OS: darwin 24.5.0

    ProductName: macOS
    ProductVersion: 15.5
    BuildVersion: 24F74

    Steps to Reproduce

    1. Power up both iPads

    2. Power up Main computer (SoundFlow automatically launches on startup)

    3. Launch SoundFlow on iPads (Each computer on a network will be represented by an icon on each connected iPad)

    Expected Result

I'd expect to see icons representing each connected Mac in a network and SF enabled visible on the iPads when the Mac Studio is fully booted and SoundFlow has been launched on each iPad.

Also....After working on my main computer for a certain amount of time, the connection to my iPad decks is lost and the SF icon for my main computer is also missing from both iPads and I have to quit and restart SF again in order to get my connections back. I icon that represents my 2nd computer is still visible on my iPads though.

    Actual Result

The only icon that I see is the one that represents SoundFlow on the 2nd computer that has DADman and MoMdeck on it. Not visible on my Main computer. I have a 2 computer setup.

    Workaround

I have to quit and relaunch SoundFlow on my main computer and then both icons appear on my 2 iPads that I use for SF decks.

    Other Notes

These 2 iPads are connected to my main Mac Studio via the WiFi connection to my router. Both computers do not have WiFi enabled in the network settings.

    System Information

    SoundFlow: 5.10.5

    MacOS: Sequoia 15.5

    Computer: 2022 M1 Mac Studio Ultra • 128gb Flash • 4TB internal Flash Memory

    iPads - iPad Pro MVX23LL/A + iPad mini (5th Gen) MUQW2LL/A
    IOS on Both iPads: 18.5

    1. Hi Ron,

Is this something new that's changed recently? I notice you're on Sequia, we've had reports of network permissions needing changes here - I'll cc @Chad for more info.

Also, are you using static DHCP leases on your router so that your iPads keep the same IPs all the time?

Sorry for the delayed reply, Christian. Just seeing these new posts now.

This situation seems to have started around the time that I updated to SF5.10.3. I’m not saying that this build is the problem and I also suspect there an Apple security factor in this issue. I’m on Sequoia 15.5, currently. It was also happening on MacOS 15.3 and 4 as well. I’ve also tried reverting back to SK 5.10. 3 and 4 and that doesn’t seem to make any difference from I’m experiencing on SF 5.10.5. I usually have to quit and relaunch SF most times after booting my Main M1 Mac Studio Ultra. I’m in DHCP mode and the IPs don’t seem to change.

I’m having the same SF connection issues on my 2nd computer which runs DaDman and MoMdeck. Andrew’s aware of it and I logged a bug report on that issue as well.

          Thanks, @chrscheuer!

          Hi, @Ron_Aston,

          Thanks for the report here.

I'll link your other two posts about this here so we can aggregate all the info:

Also, noting that you are tracking an issue with connecting with MomDeck here:

From these posts, it seems that you have enabled local network access. That is typically the biggest hindrance for SoundFlow on MacOS Sequoia. Another new permission that may or may not help would be System Settings > Privacy & Security > App Management:

          https://soundflow.org/docs/getting-started/install-soundflow/known-issues#macOS-Sequoia-app-management

It's worth manually adding SoundFlow to that list to rule it out.

It may be worth hopping on a Zoom call to troubleshoot in real time.

If you want to do that, can you contact support@soundflow.org? I am leaving for a vacation next week, but have some time today. Otherwise, @Kitch could likely hop on the line and work through some troubleshooting if needed.

I tried the suggestions and I even went as far as completely using the Terminal commands to completely remove SoundFlow on both computers twice but nothing seems to get me back to the stability that I've had for years with SoundFlow. I wish I never installed Sequoia, though I know that others seem to be doing OK with it. I also know that I'm not alone with what I'm experiencing. My biggest problem is with MoMdeck not being able to load my Stream Deck Plus configuration when DaDman loads without having to trick it somehow to get it to work.

I would more than welcome your offer to do a zoom call and perhaps you could get into both of my computers to see what might be causing these issues. I feel like I've tried everything that I can think of as well as various suggestions from several people. I appreciate your help, Chad. Thank you.

                  Hi @Ron_Aston

Please email me at support@soundflow.org, and we can set up a time to jump on a Zoom call to troubleshoot further.

                  Thanks in advance.

Hi Chad and thanks for your replies! I wasn’t aware of the Local Access factor. Your info is very helpful and I’m anxious to try your suggestions today and I’ll let you know how it goes. I’m also happy to do a Zoom call with you and I appreciate the offer. I should have answers for you later on today.

In addition, I originally posted about the MoMdeck issues in the SF forum, but Christian asked me to submit a report again using the 'Help/Issue' section of the main SF menu pulldown window in order to get logs etc. which I did several days ago. 'Hopefully you'll be able to find it.

                    @chrscheuer,

I had a Zoom call with Ron last week, and I checked that all the permissions were set correctly for his systems.

Ron had Accessibility, Local Network, and App Management settings set correctly.

Even with these set correctly, Ron is still experiencing an issue with his computers not being visible in the SoundFlow iOS app at startup without using the workaround stated in the post.

Regarding the iPads disconnecting after a period of time, I see there are multiple instances of the following in Ron's logs.

21.05.2025 12:49:08.99 <info> [Backend]: [WebSocketServer] Error handling websocket request: System.Net.WebSockets.WebSocketException (0x80004005): The remote party closed the WebSocket connection without completing the close handshake.,

Similar lines like this repeat till 21.05.2025 12:49:48.26, ie, for approximately 40 seconds.

From other reports with these kinds of errors, this possibly indicates there's something obscuring the connection, VPN, firewall, or other internal network configuration.

Do you have any other thoughts/ideas, or suggestions for troubleshooting steps for this?

                    1. Setting static DHCP leases for the computers and iPads on the router is the most important thing so that all retain the same IP every time. Beyond that, force quitting the iPad app to make sure it sees the network a new.
There are definitely bugs around connectivity in this area that could be improved but would require changes to the apps. This is logged in our system, but unfortunately due to other urgent tasks it will be a while before we can take a look.

                      1. One more thing to consider. Try removing SoundFlow entirely from applications, reset via the tccutil instructions, reboot the computer so that all permission caches are reset properly. And only then reinstall SoundFlow (the latest version). This could clear up any potential permission problems by making sure macOS sees it as a single version of SF (not an auto-updated one).

                          @Ron_Aston,

As Christian suggested, to "Reset All Permissions for SoundFlow, follow the steps in this article.

                          https://soundflow.org/docs/getting-started/install-soundflow/known-issues#reset-all-permissions

Note: You may also need to manually enable "App Management" accessibility for SoundFlow.

It might also be a good idea to do a computer restart after resetting the permissions, just in case.

Let me know if you get stuck.

Hi Christian and Kitch. I’m only seeing these replies now. I could swear that we used to get email notifications when there was a message or reply. In any case I’ll try to do all of these suggestions today. At the same time, I’ve never had these connection issues in all my years of my working with SoundFlow. I know that Apple keeps changing OS related things so I’m guessing that this is a Sequoia related issue. I’ll let you know how it goes after changing things on my end. Thanks for all of your help, guys!

Hi guys - I've completed all of Christian's suggestions and so far all is good with Soundflow on both computers with the exception of the MoMdeck. The only way that I can get it to work is by going into Privacy & Security/App Management and adding Soudflow to that window with it enabled. That makes it appear in the DaDman Device List window. Even if DaDman was open before doing what I just described with the 'App Management' window and Soundflow.

FTR...I've changed my network settings on both Macs and both iPads that are SF decks on the Main Mac Studio to 'Manual' rather than DHCP and so far I haven't lost any connects after a couple of hours now. My only big problem is with the MoMdeck. Up until a few weeks ago, it's worked flawlessly for me. If anything changes her I'll let you know. Once again, thanks for all of your help!!

Well....I was hopeful that this this was finally fixed after 3+ weeks of dealing with these issues but I decided to see if I'd have the same luck after starting both computers but unfortunately, no such luck. I've already explained the MoMdeck situation on the Mac Mini Pro (DaDman Computer). It is what it is for now.

Now SF is having issues with seeing my iPad Pro on the Mac Studio (Main Computer). It took me 3 restarts of the Mac Studio followed by a restart of SF to finally see the 2 iPad decks that are connected to that computer. This is what it's supposed to look like in the SF Edit window when both iPads are connected to that computer.

Most of the time since switching everything to Manual (static) IP, the iPad Pro (iPad 2) is not a choice and doesn't seem to be seen for some reason. I don't know what else to do at this point. I feel like I've tried everything that has been suggested including the Terminal stuff followed by the re-installs of SF on both computers and both iPads. Here are my iPad Pro (iPad 2) network settings.

Thanks again, guys. After 3 days of running SF on both computers, I seem to be OK again thanks to Christian's suggestions and instructions for completely removing SF from both computers. Now both iPads that are connected to my main Mac Studio Ultra are connecting to SF as soon as the computer is finished booting. The 2 Streamdeck XL on the DaDman Mac mini are also connecting with no problems.

The only issue that I'm having at the moment is with the MoMdeck connection. Here are the steps for my current workaround for getting it to work.

                                    1.Open DaDman
2.Open the Device List (MoMdeck won't be visible yet)
                                    3.Open System Settings/Privacy & Security/App Management
4.By default, SF won't be in that window until you click the + sign and add it. I did this a few days ago after the complete UNinstall/REinstall of SF.

5.Since then, I just need to turn it off in that window and then I'll have to enter my computer's password and hit Enter.
6.Then you'll get a window that says that SF needs to Quit and be Restarted. Click on the highlighted button.
7.Once SF has restarted, Check the Device List window again and you should suddenly see that MoMdeck has appeared and your DaDman sessions and profile will be loaded on the Streamdeck+ (in my case),

You may need to click on the Device List window to bring it to the front in order to see the MoMdeck in that window. This has worked every time I do these steps so far.

I should add that I'm losing my iPad and SF connection after a while and have to restart SF again to get them back.
